BAL: Who is Ferroviário de Maputo?
Ferroviário de Maputo, a traditional Mozambican sports club founded in 1924, with its notable basketball section initiated in 1960, has emerged as a dominant force in the sport. After a period of 45 years since the creation of its basketball section, the club reached its peak by winning its first national championship in 2005 and subsequently secured an impressive total of nine Mozambican national titles, including a remarkable sequence of four consecutive victories between 2005 and 2009. With the support of coach Milagre Macome and led by talents such as the Spanish player Álvaro Calvo, MVP in 2018 and 2019, and the young point guard Baggio Chimonzo, the 'Locomotives' secured their qualification for the Basketball Africa League (BAL) after defeating Uganda's City Oilers 74-57, with Calvo contributing 20 points, demonstrating their reputation for strong defense.
