“We Die Young” opens Facelift and was written by Jerry Cantrell after seeing young kids — some as young as nine or ten — dealing drugs on the streets of Seattle. The lyrics tackle gang violence and the drug trade cutting lives short before they’d barely begun. Layne Staley described it as a direct reaction to watching those realities creep into the lives of preteens in the city. It was the band’s first major label single, released on Columbia in July 1990, and became a hit on metal radio.
